DUSHANBE, May 18, 2010, Asia-Plus  -- The 37th session of the Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) Member States has opened in Dushanbe today.

More than 80 delegations from the OIC member nations, observer countries as well as international and regional organizations have arrived in the Tajik capital to attend the meeting that runs through May 20.

The 37th CFM is expected to discuss political and economic issues as well as problems of fighting international terrorism.

President Emomali Rahmon addressed the 37th session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the OIC Member States.

Addressing the meeting the president noted that the global financial and economic crisis and new global challenges require joining of efforts of mankind and the Organization of the Islamic Conference could play an important role in this direction, according to presidential press service.  He also pointed out increasing role of the Organization in affairs of international community.

President Rahmon noted that the establishment of the Islamic Support Fund with the authorized capital of 10 billion U.S dollars and a special institution for providing humanitarian aid in case of emergency was a striking example of practical steps taken by OIC.

Rahmon said that OIC could play an important role in resolving problems of Iraq, Palestine and Afghanistan.

He also noted that the majority of Muslim developing countries have been seriously affected by the crisis and the Islamic Development Bank and the mentioned Fund could help tackle problems facing those countries.

The Tajik head of state added that providing worthy life to each of Muslims and raising prestige of Islam in the world should become the foundation of work of the Organization, the press service said.

Tajikistan joined the Organization of the Islamic Conference in 1992.

The Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) is an international organization with a permanent delegation to the United Nations.  It groups 57 member states, from the Middle East, Africa, Central Asia, Caucasus, Balkans, Southeast Asia, South Asia and South America (Guyana and Suriname).  These States decided to pool their resources together, combine their efforts and speak with one voice to safeguard the interest and ensure the progress and well-being of their peoples and those of other Muslims in the world.
